Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all. Ecclesiastes 7:16-18

I have never been an athlete. When teams were picked at school, I was the last one picked or close to the last. The team captains knew that I would not be a great asset to the team. In verse 18 it says, "he that feareth God shall come forth of them all." We can win. I don't have to be the fastest, the strongest, or the best. God chooses us to love Him. We don't have to wait for man to choose us.

There is a warning in these verses. God is not trying to say not to be righteous, but don't be over righteous. Don't think you are the wisest or the most righteous. He also says that it is good to take hold of this. We shouldn't think too highly of ourselves. It is easy to look at others' faults, but we also need a mirror to look at our own. Let us not be as someone choosing a team and think that others are not good enough. God has already chosen the team.
